Session 2 – Dealing with super death benefits - The practicalities

This session will guide you through the various options for cashing the deceased member's benefit, focusing on strategies to retain as much of their balance inside the fund as possible.
Additionally, we will discuss the rules around claiming exempt current pension income (ECPI) in these cases ensuring that the fund and ultimate beneficiaries aren’t paying more tax than is necessary.
Our presenters
Natalie Scott
Natalie has led the SMSF divisions of mid and second tier firms and understands SMSFs from the ground up – accounting, tax, structuring and advice. She has spent well over a decade immersed in the intricacies of how SMSFs operate, navigating an increasingly complex legislative and regulatory environment, and managing the issues that arise servicing client needs.
At Knowledge Shop, Natalie is an adviser's adviser, helping the profession clarify the practical requirements and opportunities of SMSFs. She brings this knowledge to her presentations and explores the issues in a very practical way – knowledge that is immediately transferable in practice.
Natalie is a Chartered Accountant and a specialist member of the SMSF Association.
Jason Hurst
Jason is an experienced commentator, presenter and writer on superannuation and retirement. He specialises in breaking down complex technical concepts for professional advisors and their clients.
He has over 20 years’ experience in the wealth and retirement sectors, working with accountants and advisers to build their technical skills in superannuation, retirement, Insurance, social security and age care, and enjoys helping to provide the tools to articulate these concepts in a simple and easy to follow way to clients.
Jason also works with the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) as a subject matter expert for the CFP Capstone certification and a technical student mentor to those undertaking the CFP courses.
He has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Newcastle, is a SMSF Specialist Advisor, and holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation.
