The latest tax developments and hot issues

There is always plenty happening in the world of tax and it can be difficult to keep up. In this session we bring you up to date with the latest developments across the tax system and the practical implications for your clients.

We take a look at a recent Federal Court decision which focused on a common issue faced by many practitioners assisting private groups. That is, how do you determine whether a benefit is provided to someone in their capacity as an employee or director if they are also a shareholder or beneficiary of the business entity and what impact does this have from a tax perspective?

We also look at the ATO’s current focus on the controlled foreign company rules and help you identify clients who might be affected and what needs to be done to ensure clients comply with their obligations.

GST and cross border transactions

We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of practitioners struggling to apply the GST rules to transactions with an international element to them. In this session we look at the most common problem areas and explain the process that needs to be followed to ensure that clients are managing their GST obligations correctly, without having to pay more GST than they really need to.

We look at when transactions can stay completely outside the Australian GST system, how to deal with services provided to foreign customers and when clients based overseas might be exposed to GST in Australia. The ATO has been updating some of its rulings in this space in recent months so we also take this opportunity to make sure you are across the latest guidance.
